Built to last, designed to care
CLT: carbon-cutting construction
Our approach has always been to reduce our hotels’ carbon footprint from the very beginning, with sustainability built in from the start.
Buildings are estimated[1] to be responsible for 32% of global energy use and 34% of global CO2 emissions, with materials like steel and cement accounting for 18% of emissions. This is why all our properties are new-builds, with most (24) made from Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT); a sustainable and renewable alternative.
The criss-cross layers of bonded wood mean CLT outperform traditional building materials in lots of ways, providing a durable construction material with excellent thermal efficiency. Best of all, its lower embodied carbon footprint helps us create more energy-efficient and sustainable buildings whilst reducing our environmental impact.
Finally, certification ensures the wood is responsibly sourced and fully traceable, while a focus on prefabricated elements leads to improved on-site safety, as less time is spent on construction.
Renewable energy
We power and heat our hotels with the greenest energy available in each country we operate, and some (3) of our hotels use solar panels too.
Where possible, our hotels connect to district heating and cooling networks to conserve resources and support city-wide efforts to reduce carbon emissions. As of 2026, a third (9) of our hotels already link to these shared systems, with a tenth expected once Plymouth’s heat network scheme becomes operational (currently anticipated for 2028).
But sourcing renewable energy isn’t enough on its own – conserving it matters just as much. That’s why we focus on reducing waste, from insulation that reuses building heat to upgrading the products we use inside our hotels.
Energy efficiency
To help us keep improving, we track electricity and gas use across our portfolio through a central system that helps us spot opportunities to save even more.
Our properties are fitted with energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting, with motion-detector sensors and smart climate control systems to help us conserve energy when public and staff areas aren’t being used. Applying this same theory, we may also close specific floors during low-occupancy or off-peak periods.
In addition to completing all mandatory UK and EU energy audits, each hotel tracks its own energy usage every month via the Marriott Environmental Sustainability Hub to detect opportunities for further energy-saving practices.
Green building certification
Our hotels are designed for efficiency and built to meet international eco-standards, earning either LEED or BREEAM accreditation.
These rigorous frameworks assess everything from energy efficiency and water conservation to the materials used in construction, making sure sustainability is part of the fabric of every property. In turn, this helps us create healthier environments with a reduced environmental footprint.
For us, getting the certificate is never the goal. The result is a more responsible stay, helping guests sleep easy knowing they’ve chosen a hotel that meets the highest sustainability standards.
