Sustainability

Since Hotel Co 51 was founded in 2020, we have set out to change the way hotels are operated. Our goal is to deliver hospitality with purpose by putting people and the planet first.

Embedding sustainability within our hotels’ DNA

Working alongside Vastint, who build the hotels we run, our approach has always been to reduce our properties’ carbon footprint by designing in sustainability from the very start. This is one of the reasons Hotel Co 51’s properties are predominantly new-build rather than conversions, as it allows us to use less carbon-intensive materials with significant environmental benefits.

Our new hotels are built using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT); a strong and durable alternative to traditional concrete or steel. Prefabrication leads to faster build times, reduced waste and fewer transport requirements, whilst the innovative material’s lower embodied carbon and excellent thermal efficiency creates more energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.

As a result, all our hotels receive either LEED or BREEAM sustainable building certificates. This accreditation green building practices considers energy performance, CO2 reduction, and resource optimisation, including advanced water-saving systems and the use of less carbon-intensive materials that provide a healthier environment for guests as well as employees.

Operations that build our sustainable foundations

We then build on each hotel’s solid sustainable foundations with meaningful and measurable on-property initiatives that have a positive lasting impact in the areas we operate, and on the communities we serve. From procuring renewable energy and developing a responsible supply chain to sustainable waste solutions that embrace circular economy principles, we recognise the importance of regularly reviewing and improving the way we work.

For us certification itself is never the goal, but provides a critical starting point from which to measure our performance and identify opportunities for future improvements. Hotel Co 51 is therefore focused on securing and maintaining the guest-friendly Green Key certification across our European portfolio, with the majority of our hotels having already successfully completed the process.

With the support of our dedicated portfolio-wide Sustainability Team, we strive to embed sustainable environmental and social practices into every department, and factored into every decision.

By demonstrating how each hotel adheres to Green Key’s strict environmental and socially-responsible criteria, and by being transparent about our approach, we hope our guests and employees can sleep even easier knowing they’ve chosen a hotel with the highest sustainability standards. And a hotel that is managed by a company dedicated to finding new ways to improve its environmental and social footprint. Read more about our sustainability strategy here.

Learn more about Green Key

The Green Key certificate is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to hotels and other hospitality establishments that meet strict environmental and sustainability criteria. This certification, managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), signifies a commitment to sustainable practices in areas such as energy and water conservation, waste management, and the use of environmentally friendly products. Achieving the Green Key certification involves a comprehensive assessment of the establishment’s operations and adherence to a set of rigorous standards designed to minimize environmental impact. This certification not only helps reduce the ecological footprint of the hospitality industry but also appeals to environmentally conscious guests who prioritize sustainability in their travel choices.

Learn more about LEED

LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED certification provides independent verification of a building’s green features, allowing for the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of resource-efficient, high-performing, healthy, cost-effective buildings. LEED is the triple bottom line in action, benefiting people, the planet, and profit.

Learn more about BREEAM

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a leading global standard for assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings and large-scale developments. It evaluates a building’s performance across various environmental categories such as energy efficiency, water usage, indoor air quality, materials, waste management, and ecological impact. BREEAM certification not only helps reduce the environmental footprint of buildings but also enhances their market value and appeal by demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices and occupant well-being. This certification promotes the adoption of greener building methods and supports the creation of healthier, more sustainable communities worldwide.
